End Violence Against Children

Phase II of euCONSENT
funded by Safe Online

Safe Online is a global investment vehicle dedicated to keeping children safe online, and has recognised that a foundation for this is first to know if a user is a child, so it has extended its scope to include initiatives designed to deliver online age assurance.

The second phase of euCONSENT builds on our initial project which was funded by the European Commission, and will put the technology successfully piloted in Phase 1 with dummy websites into live operation with real platforms.

About the project

Thanks to the generous funding from Safe Online, we’re pleased to announce that we’re advancing into Phase II of our mission

  • With the collaborative efforts of our dedicated team of academics and technology leaders in the age assurance sector, euCONSENT is ready to take the next step towards achieving our goal of creating a safer online environment for children: Taking the successful pilot of phase I, we are developing our interoperable solution in the real world by removing the dummy websites and replacing them with real, live websites.
  • While the pilot phase provided valuable insights and proof of concept, the use of dummy websites had its limitations in accurately simulating real-world online environments. By integrating real, live websites into our solution, euCONSENT is ensuring that providers can inter-operate in between authentic digital systems, offering a more accurate representation of the challenges and opportunities present in the online landscape. We must also address the commercial and liability matters which arise in a live operation.
  • euCONSENT continues to collaborate closely with our academics from Phase I, alongside the age verification providers and online service providers, to facilitate the seamless integration of real, live websites into our interoperable solution.

The transition to real, live websites brings several benefits to our initiative:

Authentic User Experience

Users will interact with genuine online platforms, providing more realistic feedback and data for further development and optimisation.

Improved Testing and Validation

Live websites offer the opportunity for comprehensive testing and validation of our interoperable solution in real-world scenarios, ensuring its efficacy and reliability.

Enhanced Engagement

Stakeholders, including children, parents, educators, and online service providers, can actively engage with the platform within the context of familiar online environments, generating greater acceptance and adoption.

Safe Online

Safe Online is the only global investment vehicle dedicated to keeping children safe in the digital world. We strengthen systems and catalyse innovative solutions to make the internet a safe place for children to explore, learn and develop.

As an investment platform, our mission is to foster a digital environment where every child feels safe and empowered. We achieve this by investing in evidence, solutions, cutting-edge technologies and cross-sectoral programmes and capacities, each aimed at addressing online child sexual exploitation, abuse and other digital harms.

Grants

Safe Online is investing USD $2 million across 10 innovative projects to seed and grow solutions that leverage existing and new technologies to tackle online child sexual exploitation and abuse (CSEA).

The new projects will focus not only on technology solutions, but also include research around the use of tech solutions for the two key areas – age assurance and live streaming of abuse in the online CSEA ecosystem.
