PPPA-AGEVER-01-2020: “Outline and trial an infrastructure dedicated to the implementation of child rights and protection mechanisms in the online domain”

A summary of the achievements and lessons learned of the euCONSENT project and what comes next

And what is next? The consortium agreed to create a new non-profit to take forward the project. While we could leave it to the private sector market to simply agree between themselves to exchange age checks, we want to retain the governance and ethics that euCONSENT has established. The generous funding of the European Commission has now ended, so the new organization will need to find other sources – AV providers, large platforms, research grants etc. But we hope you will agree with all those involved that it is important to keep the euCONSENT dream alive.

euCONSENT’s first large scale pilot

The first large scale pilot of our project just ended. It was held between the 17th of February until 3rd of March.

All the activities performed in the first half of the project – establishing a common vocabulary for the project, finding legal grounds for the framework to be implemented, analysing what parents, children and adults want and expect to find in the online environment to have a sense of security and safety, knowing the current situation for the way that online businesses (online shops, social media channels, online AV content, etc.) have been implementing methods for obtaining parental consent, protecting children and their rights, GDPR requirements, etc. – have created the basis for the framework, a route to follow in developing it.

We’ve asked our technical leader, Vangelis Bagiatis, to give us some details on the pilot in a more comprehensive but not very technical manner.

euConsent conference, May 2022

After the success of last year’s conference, the euCONSENT team has decided to run another conference on the 25th of May in Athens. We hope to have rather more in person attendees now that travel restrictions have eased; however, it will be a hybrid event to give the opportunity for people to attend virtually. Preparations are already under way, with discussions on which topics will be included in the schedule. We hope that the conference will be as well-received as the last one. There were over 160 participants in our first event, and we were pleased that the virtual conference platform we selected gave those who could not be there in person an equal opportunity to engage and ask their questions.

euCONSENT Advisory Board Members

Keen observers of our website will have noticed that we have now published the membership of our project Advisory Board.  We have been very keen from the outset of this project to involve a wide range of stakeholders, including those who supply technology to the online world, those who focus on the protection of the rights of children in the digital space, regulators and those who will rely on age assurance to offer more care to children on their platforms.
