As European Parliament Coordinator on Children’s Rights, I am responsible for the promotion and protection of children’s rights within the European Parliament.
Online technologies provide many wonderful opportunities for children both in terms of education and social interaction. All children should be able to participate in and benefit from the internet, social media and other digital tools. At the same time, we must ensure we have policies, laws and tools in place to protect children from abuse and exploitation when in the online environment.
The work of the euCONSENT project team to develop an infrastructure dedicated to the implementation of a mechanism that will provide age verification and parental consent tools in the EU should enable children to harness the benefits of digital technologies and at the same time be better protected against abusive and harmful content online.
This ambitious project will also contribute to our understanding of existing methods of age verification and parental consent in the online environment, thus providing policy makers in the EU with essential information for the future development of law and policy to respect the rights of the child online while also guaranteeing their protection and safety.
I welcome the expertise of the project team in the field and wish them a successful outcome. I will be happy to support and promote the results of this project in my capacity as European Parliament Coordinator on Children’s Rights.
